Litera-Tea and Sharing a Little Poetry

The Tea Party

I had a little tea party
This afternoon at three.
'Twas very small-
Three guest in all-
Just I, myself and me.

Myself ate all the sandwiches,
While I drank up the tea;
'Twas also I who ate the pie
And passed the cake to me.

~Jessica Nelson North

I was going to call it "quits" with this little poem. It's been one of my favorites for a long time! And, sometimes the best celebration with a cup of tea is one you give yourself. :-)

But, then again, when you've got news to share, questions to ask, and/or a desire to be with friends, how nice it is to share a cup of tea during your get-together time.

This is a poem I found today, while doing a Google-Search for a good "tea poem." I really liked this one and thought maybe you would, too. Enjoy.

DRINKIN' FROM MY SAUCER

I've never made a fortune
And it's prob'ly too late now;
But I don't worry 'bout that much,
I'm happy anyhow!

And as I go along life's way
Reapin' better than I sowed.
I'm drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

Haven't got a lot of riches,
And sometimes the going's tough;
But I've got loving ones around me,
And that makes me rich enough!

I thank God for His blessings
And the mercies He's bestowed.
I'm drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

I 'member times when things went wrong,
My faith wore somewhat thin;
But all at once the dark clouds broke
And light peeped through again.

So, Lord, help me not to gripe
About tough rows I've hoed.
I'm drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

If God gives me strength and courage
When the way grows steep and rough,
I'll not ask for other blessings;
I'm already blessed enough!

May I never be too busy
To help others bear their loads.
I'll keep drinkin' from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed!

I have heard the words of the second poem sung on Christian television.

Hi Carrie,
Really? It holds up very well as a poem, too, doesn't it? :-)
Thanks for visiting.

Love both of your poems. The first one because I think we'll be happier if we treat ourselves to tea by ourselves at times. The second one because it's good to remember just how blessed we are. thanks for digging that second one up!

Awww those poems are great! Thank you for sharing them. The second has gone around as an email forward with lots of whacky graphics. I prefer your version since it presents the more thoughtful message.

What a delightful little poem! The song lyrics I am very familiar with. This song was a special part of a youth conference I chaperoned. Two of the girls dedicated and sang it to me after the trip at our church's annual Valentine banquet. Thanks for brining back a special memory!

I love those poems, especially the one about my cup overflowing! I think I will print it out.

The green plaid heart shaped tea cup is beautiful too!

How nice to have so many guests. Thank you for the interesting and kind comments.
Ellen B - I must confess that I treat myself to tea quite often. :-)

Vee- I found this poem in a book at a local used book store.

Minn. Kathi, I did a double-take, also, when I saw Jimmy Dean's name.

Grace, Welcome.

Miss Sandy, Isn't it wonderful when something so simple can bring back such poignant memories? :-)

Yellow Rose Arbor, I was fortunate in that I found it at a hospital auxiliary-support store. (I think I may actually plant a miniature violet in the cup.)

I've always enjoyed the Tea Party poem, but the Saucer one is new to me. Very nice.

A lovely selection of poetry. . thank you for sharing them and for the reminder that even when things look tough and hopeless, God provides the strength, courage, and hope to continue. It is so true that through Him our cups do overflow!

I'm so glad you are a participant in the Gracious Hospitality blog-a-thon!

Hi! I used the same little poem in my tea-blog, but I didn't know the author. I had found it years ago and incorporated it into my scrapbook, now I can update the info! Isn't it such a sweet little poem! Just love it! :) Rhonda

I love both of those poems! Wow, thanks for sharing them with me.

My Gramps used to drink his coffee from his saucer. Nice memory.

I got a nice chuckle from the first poem, i have heard it before but it was good to hear it again. Yes, i enjoy tea by myself quite often. And it's me who eats all the treats.

(((hugs)))

Hi Becky Sue! Thanks for your visit! Did you know many Europeans poured their tea in their saucer to cool it before they drank it (often from the saucer)?

Yep, I'm pretty good about treating myself, too! ;-) hugs to you!
